How To Find The Perfect Designer For You!
I never recommend going out of your budget So often I hear people in facebook groups talk about how they are just going to DIY their brand or their website because the thought of finding a designer just overwhelms them. I know that I touched base on this a little bit in, but I think I can definitely go a little more into detail, and if it helps just one person find the right designer then I'm happy!
I'm a designer, so you probably think this is going to be one big pitch post where I tell you that you need to look no further because you can just hire me right?
As a graphic designer, I know the importance of finding the RIGHT DESIGNER FOR YOU! It's almost like finding the right match on one of those online dating services! Being a good match is just as important for the designer, as it is for you.
So here are my steps to finding the designer that works best for you!
CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSITE
Before you even talk to the designer, I always recommend you check out their website. Take a look around and get to know them a bit. Check out every page including the about page, their terms & conditions, frequently asked questions, testimonials, etc. You should get a feel for who they are and how they work just from doing this!
DO YOU LOVE THEIR PORTFOLiO?
A designer's portfolio is the body of work that they are most proud of, and want to keep doing? If you love that style that they are showing then yay! If not, then I recommend continuing the search. Because while a designer can absolutely change their style for you, you really don't want them to because their work is a whole new level of excellence when they are in their element. Don't you want that level of excellence to be visible on your project?
DOES THEIR PRICING WORK FOR YOU?
I never recommend you going out of your budget to get the brand and website of your dreams. But, you also can't expect a designer to change their pricing for you. If you love a designer and just can't swing the whole payment at once, then check to see what their payment process is. Most designers break the total into at least two payments, but, some will break it up even further if you ask. Our typical payment plan is 50/50, but we know that not everyone can swing that and we always want to help, so we can break some packages into quarterly payments as well!
WHAT DOES YOUR GUT SAY?
Do you feel without even talking to them, that they are a good match for you? When you look everything over, are you even more eager to contact them and start your business relationship/friendship?! If you don't get that feeling, then maybe keep looking around. You should be excited to connect with them. Not just be like "well they are within my budget, so whatever."
REACH OUT TO THEM!
By now, you may feel ready to contact the designer. Reach out to them through their contact page. Ask them if you can do a discovery call over the phone or via video to get to know each other, share your ideas, and see if you even click. If you can't have a conversation with your potential designer, then you definitely wouldn't work well together. I will not book a client without a video call. It is just as important for me as a designer as it is for the client to click before working together. You want to be excited and ready to work together, because you will be spending a good bit of time corresponding together in the near future.
BOOK IT BABY!!!
If all feels good, either let them know you are looking to move forward, or, thank them for their time and continue looking.
It's so important for you, and for the designer, that you are a good match to work together! It makes the experience just that much better!
